MusikMesse Video: Numark IDJ
In this video shot live from the floor of MusikMesse 2007 in Frankfurt, get an eye and earful of Numark's iDJ controller, the must-have for those who believe that AAC-compressed iPod files are a suitable-sounding subsititue for Redbook CDs or even vinyl in a DJ set. Okay, you don't have to choose -- the iDJ will work with CDs or vinyl too, but it was built with the iUser in iMind, for iBetter or iWorse. Take a peek at the iDJ in this Gearwire video.
NUMARK REPRESENTATIVE: Okay. We’ve got the iPod plugged in, and I plugged in a USB key in the back as well. I don’t have any turntables or CDs plugged in but you can do that also, and you can just switch at the back if it’s turntables or CDs, and basically what’s cool is you can see you can adjust the pitch. So, you can change the pitch and tempo of the track. You can jog through and you can adjust the volume.
Basically, this is an iPod player with a built-in crossfader and volume controls and can select the songs. The song selection is much more powerful than a basic iPod because you can also, in addition to browsing by title, artist, or by album, you can also browse by BPM, and you can see the BPMs of each track, so, you know, choosing a few, a bunch of songs that you want to mix together is very easy with the BPM browser. You just select the BPM range that you want to mix with, and it drops you into a menu of songs ranked by BPM. That’s a new feature that we just started to this prototype.
Coming back to the Crate, the Crate is our sort of our master playlist area where you can add songs to it from multiple from the iPod to the USB key. You can mix and match the order of the tracks. It’s very simple. You just add, you just select the song that you want to play and then load it to deck A or to deck B and then play it out. It’s as simple as that.
Basically, this unit is different from the iDJ original in that you can actually pitc bend. You can beat match the songs that you want to play. You only need one iPod to play it with. It comes with a microphone input so you can do mic stuff as well, and it’s got two headphone sockets s if you’ve got, you know, either different sizes of headphone jack, you can choose which size of jack you’ve got, and its got a proper cue section as well so you can easily listen to the song that you’re going to be mixing in ahead of time, and so in essence it’s a complete system for DJing with one iPod.
