Odo Synths Double Six V2.0: Hello Operators

October 20, 2008
Odo Synths Double Six V2.0

Do you like operators? Are you compulsively dialing zero on rotary phones? Odo Synths Double Six V2.0 might just be the miracle cure you've been waiting for.

Double Six V2.0 is a six-operator FM synth featuring 32 DX7 algorithms and 16 four-operator algorithms. Like nominees at an extravagant awards show, each operator has its own envelope. Unlike said awards shows, you get to choose between one and eight stages and set your sustain point from one to seven or turn it off completely.

The envelopes also feature optional stage looping and a time control for changing the time of the envelope. You can turn the operator off, but knowing your operator compulsion, you'd probably rather turn it fixed or pitched. Each operator also has fine-tune with a reset button and an octave knob that can drop down six or jump up three octaves. Direct from Odo Synths, "The operators also have a clipper to get very noisy sounds." I like that. It's like the noisy sounds are bad guys in a chase scene in an old-timey, slapstick comedy routine.

FIRST GUY: "Those noisy sounds! They're trying to escape!"

SECOND GUY: "Let's get 'em!"

FIRST GUY and SECOND GUY simultaneously start running and collide. Laughter ensues

What's more, you also get three envelopes to oscillator pitch and cutoff with BPM retrigger mode. This means you have a dozen different BPM rates, three LFOs with 16 different BPMs and a free mode. You can trigger the LFOs with a keystroke or by hitting play on your host in free mode.

Lastly, you've got EZ preset, which allows you to come up with new sounds quickly. It lets you reset all the fine-tunes by hitting a button or changing the waveforms. You can also randomize pretty much all of the controls and settings.

Enough with the jibber-jabber! What's new in version two?

  • Operators have 11 different waveforms
  • Every operator has a clipper
  • Two octave sequencers
  • Three envelopes with retrigger mode on BPM rates
  • Three LFOs with 19 different waveforms with 16 different BPM speeds and free rate mode
  • MIDI learn
  • Velocity controls for volume filter and phase modulation depth
  • One bug is fixed. There were some problems in the DoubleSix V1.0 algorithms view
  • Envelope stage looping
  • Gater effect
  • Updated the delay -- it has now 32 bpm rates
