Lovers of the more AM-sounding Vako Optigan and Orchestron are in for a treat as pre-orders for the Optigan.cOm Optigan Radioaktivox And Orchestron Marimba discs are now being taken.
There was once a time that the Mellotron had competition in the form of the toyish Optigan (OPTIcal orGAN, alright?) which used optical discs as a form of storage and playback media instead of the almighty tape. A famous previous user of the related instrument called the Orchestron, Patrick Moraz, used it to great effect in the Yes album "Relayer", and since that time that he lost the prototype of the Orchestron, some have wondered about it and the Optigan, leading their own cult following.
Enough of the crappy Optigan and Orchestron history lesson and time to move forward to the new sale. Present Vako Optigan and Orchestron users may now place pre-orders for the new Optigan Radioaktivox disc and the new Orchestron Marimba disc. Each disc costs 99.99 USD. Now, as per vintage audio lover's preferences, these new discs are really new issues (with the last discs being issued in the late 1970s) that retain the same sort of warm AM-ish flavor that only the Vako Optigan and Orchestron can provide.
Describing the discs, the Optigan Radioaktivox is something similar to choir sounds used by a famous German synth band from the 70s (Kraftwerk anyone?). The Orchestron Marimba disc, on the other hand, comes from the original Optigan/Orchestron master tapes which had recordings of a real marimba. It is noteworthy to mention that this particular sound never made it into the original 1970s release of the Optigan and Orchestron. If you're on the other side of the fence away from the tape Mellotron and Birotron (does anybody remember this one?) camp, getting your pre-orders placed for these new Optigan and Orchestron discs is bound to deliver that "other" flavor that sparks similar debates like Mac vs. PC, Moog vs. ARP, and others.

The Orchestron was meant to compete with the Mellotron in the mid 70's. The Optigan was never intended to. That was strictly for the kiddy and family sing alongs. Both have the same scratchy sound, though the Orchestron can be made to sound better by running the 1/4" output into equalizers.
One important point to make is that all of those tape and disc keyboards sound different and don't successfully replace each other. I know this for a fact because I have (or had) all of them - (in multiples). Even Optigan models sound different from each other. The Montgomery Wards one sounds a bit better than the plastic ones.
I'm really glad to see the interest and support for the real instruments too. Software samples don't do any of these machines real justice. Even Chamberlin tapes in Mellotrons don't replace the sound of a real Chamberlin. I guess it all comes back to the original source. You know what they say - ain't nothin' like the real thing baby!
