Ovation Balladeer: Brett's Big, Acoustic Guitar

October 19, 2007
Brett Helm's Ovation Balladeer

Brett Helm of Black Tape For A Blue Guitar doesn't care that his Ovation Balladeer is large and thick as long as it gets great tone. For him, the trade-off that whinier guitarists foolishly pass up pays off in richer, fuller tone.

Check out this interview with Brett Helm about his grand Ovation Balladeer - there's just more guitar to love.

[BRETT HELM PERFORMING WITH THE OVATION BALLADEER]

BRET HELM: We’re on?

PATRICK OGLE: Yeah.

BRET HELM: Hello. My name is Bret Helm. I’m in Black Tape for a Blue Girl and Audra, and I am playing an Ovation Standard Balladeer acoustic guitar tonight.

PATRICK OGLE: Why do you use the Ovation.

BRET HELM: I tried out dozens of guitars and it was the one that sounded the best and I like the curved body. A lot of people don’t like the curved body but the sound of it and feel of it is the best guitar I’ve ever played.

PATRICK OGLE: Now, is the Balladeer one of the big bodied ones or is it...?

BRET HELM: It’s the thicker one. Yeah. There’s a thinner one but their -- the tone is not as full. Yeah.

PATRICK OGLE: Do you know what -- I mean what are the tops of those guitars made of? I’m not really sure. Are they spruce?

BRET HELM: I think they are spruce. Yeah. Yeah, it’s definitely the hard, you know, the regular wood, not like a laminate.

PATRICK OGLE: What do you think about the -- I mean there’s not a -- There are a lot of people, the purists are kind of like don’t like the Ovation especially the one with that back.

BRET HELM: Yeah.

PATRICK OGLE: What you do you think -- What would you say to people who would whine about that?

BRET HELM: I don't know. I think you just got -- I think people always say that but they never actually have played one. So for me, the other type of guitars, the regular dreadnought shapes are a little bit too bulky. They cut into my arm. I don't know. This has more of a so when you can angle a little bit towards you and bring it up so I don't know. I think the tone and the neck speaks beyond just the body shape. I just -- it’s an overall it just sounds killer and feels great, you know, so.

PATRICK OGLE: All right. Fantastic. Thanks a lot.

BRET HELM: All right.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
