April 09, 2008
Kaoss KP3 And CDJ1000 Together Again

In the last video, DJ Puzzle Jason Donnelly told the world that he was going to create some hip hop on the fly using the Pioneer CDJ1000 MK3 as a sound source and the Korg KAOSS Pad KP3 as a sampler. It's time for DJ Puzzle to put his money where his mouth is.

It's all here, as it happens as DJ Puzzle makes it happen. Now all he's gotta do is put his money in savings bonds.

JASON DONNELLY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. This is Jason Donnelly, and once again we’re talking about creating an improv hip hop set using the Korg KAOSS Pad KP3 as a sampler and the CDJ1000 MK3 as a sound source. We talked about loading up a CD of our own loops and we talked about sampling into the KP3. I played you a few examples.

That was our Rhodes keyboard...,

...“Old Skool” scratch sample...,

...and out beat. And we’re going to sample those sounds into this guy into each one of these pads, and we’re going to piece it back together. I’m also going to show you how to be a little creative with that so let’s do the first step here which would be capturing the beat loop.

The first step in this process is to sample the beat loop into the KAOSS Pad. First thing you want to do is press your auto BPM then play.

This allows the KAOSS Pad to detect the BPM that the beat is, and then what we do is set your cue point to the beginning.

Okay. Play the loop, hit sampling, and press pad A on beat.

And now you are listening to the Korg KAOSS Pad playing the beat loop.

So next what we’re going to do is sort of add kind of like a snare rhythm, and what I’ll do is I’ll locate the snare.

[JASON DONNELLY PLAYING THE PIONEER CDJ1000 MK3]

So, right about there, press the cue button and now we can --

So now we got our sample from the KAOSS Pad playing right now. I’m going to add a...

So then hit sampling again.

Now, we got this additional snare rhythm going.

Now, I think I’ll add a little scratch to it.

Now we’ll locate the...

...our keyboard riff.

So there you have it.

[JASON DONNELLY IMPROVISING A HIP HOP TRACK WITH THE PIONEER CDJ1000 MK3 AND THE KORG KAOSS PAD KP3]

So, there you have your improv hip hop jam using your own creative loops and samples loaded up on a CD, the CD thrown in the CDJ1000 and having that signal go through the KAOSS Pad KP3, using it as a sampler and an effects processor, and wow. You can really do a lot with these two units alone. So yeah, I guess I’m out but I hope you really enjoyed this segment and stay tuned for more. This is Jason Donnelly with Gearwire.Com.
