Pitchfork Music Festival 2010: Free Energy, Drum Recording, And Elevator Shafts (Video)
Geoff Bucknam is the guitarist for Free Energy, but he's the kind of guy with an awareness of every aspect of live and recorded music production, i.e., the kinda guy you want on your team. Another guy you want on your team: James Murphy. As the frontman of dance-disco-punk-rock outfit LCD Soundsystem, you might think of Murphy as a purely electronic musician, but that fact is that James has a deep and practical knowledge of recording engineering, a fact that's readily apparent when you listen to Free Energy's debut LP, Stuck On Nothing (DFA Records 2010), a record he produced.
In this second part of our two-part interview with Geoff, the guitarist talks about some of the drum recording techniques employed on the album. He also discusses how a guitar-driven neo-glam-pop rock group found itself on a dance-punk label, and drops some hints as to the origin of the band's name.
