PMI Audio Presents Studio Projects Microphone Line: CS1, CS5, And More

February 12, 2007
PMI Audio's CS1 Mic, CS5 Mic, and more in the PMI Audio Studio Projects series
PMI Audio's Studio Projects Microphones include the LSD2, CS1, CS5, and many others. Some of the mics in the series are brand new, others are updated versions of old standards in the series. One model PMI is particularly keen on is the C4, an updated version from the 2003 edition of the C4. The new edition has better headroom, can handle 139 SPL with no pad, and comes with 10db and 20db resistive pads. You also get two selectable high-pass filters. Check our exclusive Winter NAMM 2007 video for all the details on the PMI Audio C4.
More info is at the PMI Audio official site.

BRENT CASEY: Hello. I’m Brent Casey with PMI Audio Group here with Joe Wallace of Gearwire.Com to talk about some of the new stuff from the Studio Projects Line: the C4 microphones, the CS1 microphone, the CS5 microphone, and the newly released LSD2 as well.

These mics are entirely new here starting with the C4. This is a continuation of the original C4 that was that came on the market in 2003 originally. This has been updated. It has a completely new circuit from front to back. It is designed to have very high headroom at this point. The circuit will take up to 139 dB SPL without a pad of any sort but it does have two pads. It has a 10-dB pad and a 20-dB pad. Both are resistive so they won’t mess up your sound by having capacitive, extra strong capacitance in the signal path.

Also there are two selectable high-pass filters. On the original C4, the pad and the high pass functions were combined; you could select either or but we’ve split them up into two discrete so you can set them up in different configurations (high pass while using the pad, etc.). This is a mic very good for drum kits and overheads, snares, definitely try it out on snare.

Good -- Very good as omni microphones for stereo recording in pairs, extremely good in omni as a vocal mic. A lot of people don’t consider small diaphragm mics to be useful in vocal recording. I think everybody -- Not everybody. Many people think that large diaphragm mics are the way to go for vocals but definitely a pressure you can use up close. You won’t have the proximity effect. You can get right up. And with the very high headroom circuit, you’re not going to find a singer that is going to scorch this mic in any time. You can blast away at the thing.

Also new with the C4 microphones is the hypercardioid capsule. Originally, the mic shipped with cardioid and omnidirectional and now has the hypercardioid for even better off axis blocking of sound, so that is an option. Anybody who has the original C4 mics can order these from PMI as well. They’re something you can get from us.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
