PreSonus DigiMax D8 and Apogee Rosetta 800 Record the Fine Ravings of Diego Stocco
As a Producer at Spectrasonics in LA, Diego Stocco creates soundsources and patches for the new flagship synthesizer Omnisphere®. He is also a creative force behind the Omnisphere Video Episodes marketing campaign. But at home, you can find him recording air vents, setting pianos on fire, and most recently, creating a hydra of a stringed instrument called the Experibass.
Of course, the real test of Stocco's expertise comes in his presentation of the sound to which he listens so closely. For the Experibass project, he tried the Presonus DigiMax D8 and the Apogee Rosetta 800 in the recording process.

I recently built a new instrument by combining a violin, a viola, a cello and double bass together, it's a 16 stringed, quadruple-necked, strange looking experiment that I thought to call Experibass.
To record it I used an assortment of mics and piezo transducers, up to 6 in total. I connected them to a pre I recently purchased, the Presonus DigiMax D8. I've used different Presonus pres in the past (TubePre, BlueTube, ADL 600) so I decided to give a try to the D8 as well.
I had the feeling that the sound was superior compared to the previous models from Presonus. It sounds more transparent even with high gain settings. The features offered in this unit are very basic and I would't mind at least a phase switch; but overall, the clarity and balance of this unit is pretty good for the price.
After the D8, the signals were going into my Apogee Rosetta 800, which I've been using for some years. Choosing a converter requires some thought, and I spent a good amount of time trying different units. I always liked the clarity of Apogee converters, and the Rosetta 800 was an amazing investment I was happy to make.

In this reporter's opinion, Mr. Stocco gets extra points for looking very dramatic in all of his photo documentation, and extra extra points for making some wicked videos. It's like watching Indiana Jones make music.
