PreSonus StudioLive Digital Mixer Shown At 125th AES In San Fran
With directorial magic akin to a Peter Jackson masterpiece, Gearwire takes its first look at the PreSonus StudioLive. Though this digital mixer has been in the public eye for the better part of the year, we were excited to see this piece with our own eyes.
The StudioLive features 16 of PreSonus' XMAX Preamps alongside 22x18 Firewire recording and playback capabilities. Needless to say, it's packed to the brim with features to make this digital mixer sound good both live and in studio. Plus, it's cosmetically built in such a fashion that I'd buy one just so that I could pretend I worked for NASA when my parents came over to visit -- anything to get them to stop berating me for getting an English degree.
JUSTIN: Hi. I’m Justin from PreSonus and you’re watching Gearwire.Com and we’re here to talk about the StudioLive, 16-channel/4-bus digital mixer.
What you have is 16 channels of XMAX mic preamps. You have a 32-bit internal DSP and effects mix. There is a 118-dB dynamic range AD converter. You also have the same JetPLL technology found in our FireStudio interface.
Now, the cool thing about this digital mixer is its very analog feel, very quick-touch control. You have quick-touch control on your Fat Channel over your dynamics and your EQ. You have quick-touch control over all of the select buttons to insert the Fat Channel across all these. Fat Channel is usable across all your channels, subs, your main, all aux buses, the internal 32-bit DSP effects and the stereo effects return. We’ve added the talkback feature in the master section for convenience to talk to your artists on stage which is usable across all the auxes and the main so you can talk to the people in the room as well.
Very analog patch bay, you can integrate your go-to gear. You can integrate your dynamics, your time-based effects as well
You have a built-in FireWire interface which is 28 digital streams to your DAW or recording software and 18 return streams from. Now we’re using Capture which is integrated with the StudioLive. It ships with the StudioLive. And it’s 16 channels, 16 tracks. There’s no I/O setup. It’s a very, very easy setup. So it’s arm all tracks and then hit record on the transport and you’re going. So, you could step away from Capture and actually concentrate on the live mix of the console.
Capture has plenty export features. So you can use the tracks, export them to whatever software you’re comfortable in, editing and playing back your mix. Now, you can play back mixes via the inputs on the StudioLive by selecting either the FireWire streams or the actual analog streams from the stage. So you can integrate a click, you can integrate a loop for a live performance. You can also mix, once you’ve recorded your tracks, you can mix within the Studio Live utilizing the Fat Channel effects and the built-in 32-bit DSP effects. Then, you can print your stereo mix back to Capture and then bounce that at the end of the session.
