Pro Co Cough Drop Or Pro Co Short Stop: Silence By Any Other Name Would Be Just As Silent
We're back with Juan Dies for more on the copious amounts of gear that he uses with Sones de Mexico. The Pro Co Cough Drop (aka Pro Co Short Stop) is a mute pedal that ended up needing some modification to serve Juan's purpose of making it phantom power compatible.
Pro Co was happy to make the fix, and the popping when Juan tried to mute or unmute his condenser mic subsided. I secretly run one in my bassists effects chain. I wonder if Pro Co can mod one so that it automatically engages every time an unnecessary slap bass part is detected.

One little nice piece of equipment that we found and that might be useful to a lot of acoustic musicians that amplify their instruments with an XLR cable coming out of their instruments. This is called the Cough Drop. It is a mute pedal that you can use to mute your instrument while you’re tuning or something. So, and it has instead of the 1/4” inputs, it has the XLR.
One thing that we had to do with this, we had to send it back to Pro Co because as we were muting, we were getting a pop sound. And they had to do a small modification because we were using it with phantom power. So now it’s modified to work with phantom power. And that’s okay, too. It does its purpose. Kind of a find. It’s not a widely-publicized piece of equipment.
