RODE NT5 And Other Microphones At Purgatory Studios
At Purgatory Studios, Mike Waxman shows us a few microphones and tells us what he uses for different applications, although he does seem to have a liking for RODE Microphones as he uses the K2 and NT5. However, a pro studio needs a nice selections of microphones to get the job done, and Mike knows that different situations call for different microphones.
He has quite a few, and his collection is growing. Add some Telefunken to his wish list!
GRETCHEN HASSE: This is the room?
MIKE WAXMAN: Yeah. A little room that could. Yeah, we track drums in here, vocals. I’ve had horn sections in here. I’ve had some of the greatest --
GRETCHEN HASSE: Cell phone players?
MIKE WAXMAN: The greatest text and cell phone players, yeah.
GRETCHEN HASSE: [LAUGHING]
MIKE WAXMAN: Yeah this is it.
GRETCHEN HASSE: So, what is this setup for now as far as the mics you’re using in here? Because this is obviously set up for [OVERLAPPING]
MIKE WAXMAN: Right now, we were doing vocals the other day, move some stuff around, I usually keep the overheads for drums kind of set up ready to go because I don’t use those stands for much of anything else. NT5’s, Rodes, great mic for the money. Rode NT5’s. Yeah. They, for overheads, phenomenal. Big fan.
GRETCHEN HASSE: Okay. I noticed -- Is that specifically from drum mics or anything else that you’re making?
MIKE WAXMAN: No, they’re made for everything. They sound awesome on piano.
GRETCHEN HASSE: Mmm hmm.
MIKE WAXMAN: They sound great on acoustic guitar. They sound -- They’re very universal, but mostly I use them for overheads and percussion, any kind of percussion really.
GRETCHEN HASSE: [INDISCERNIBLE]
MIKE WAXMAN: Yeah.
GRETCHEN HASSE: So, as far as what kind of -- What are you using here for the vocals?
MIKE WAXMAN: My favorite go-to mic for vocals on females would be a Brauner VM1.
GRETCHEN HASSE: Mmm hmm. And why is that?
MIKE WAXMAN: It just sounds incredible. It’s detailed, it’s warm. It’s got everything you want out of a mic, and it just seems to complement females more than males.
GRETCHEN HASSE: And why is that you think?
MIKE WAXMAN: Don't know.
GRETCHEN HASSE: [LAUGHING]
MIKE WAXMAN: Good question.
GRETCHEN HASSE: What do you use for men? I mean if you’re doing male vocals?
MIKE WAXMAN: Real men, we use actually another Rode mic that I like a lot is the -- What the hell is that thing? Oh, the K2, the K2.
It’s a generalization. I’m just saying that at first I’m going to try, what I said, the K2 works and sounds great on male vocals, and I’ll run that always through the Chandler, not always online. It depends on the color that I’m looking for, so it could be the API, it could be the Millennia but most of the time that’s just the magic chain right there. The Brauner, made in Germany, handmade, one of the finest mics in the world I think. I just -- The detail on it is just amazing. Acoustic guitar, it sounds amazing second to just a -- done this as far as I’m concerned. There’s a couple of mics that are up there in that category which I wouldn’t mind having in my closet too, like I say a real Telefunken or say an old Sony mic or something like that.
As far as those mics yeah, it’s just a generalization as far as gender theme but it just it, more times than not, it’s true how those translate to the different artists. You know, the Brauner will sound great on a male vocalist until I AB it with a K2, and then all for some reason that just works better. It depends on the timbre of the voice and where their range is, if they’re a tenor, if they’re a baritone, if -- how they’re singing, if it’s a rock & roll thing, if it’s more of a classical kind of vibe, if it’s a voice-over. If it’s a voice-over thing, I might use something totally different. It’s more of a cheap mic like say, and a great mic like say a Shure KSM32.
GRETCHEN HASSE: Why is that? Why would you use that?
MIKE WAXMAN: Don't know.
GRETCHEN HASSE: [LAUGHING]
MIKE WAXMAN: And it just works, you know. And it just it happens and Rode has another one called an NT2 that’s awesome on all of the ones we’ve mentioned.
