SSL, Manley, And GML Equipment: Christmas Is Around The Corner For Mike Waxman
Any true gearhead knows the art of compiling a hefty wish list, and Mike Waxman reads off some of the items on his wish list. Included are pieces of gear by SSL, Manley, and GML.
Mike also talks about George Massenburg and how GML's excellent service won him over - namely receiving a tech support call from George himself!
GRETCHEN HASSE: So, okay. Gear wish list for the future that you need to maybe record a few more CDs
MIKE WAXMAN: Yeah. You know, there’s always something. I’d love to get that SSL rack piece that you could custom make into your own, you know, put pres in there, compressors, or EQs, whatever you want to have. I’d love to have that. That would be definitely on my wish list. Can’t go wrong with SSL. A couple of Manley pieces; I really dig his stuff, a Massive Passive EQ, maybe just a Manley mic pre, one of the many that he has.
I got to have some GML stuff. I would love to have some George Massenburg pieces. Anything he designs is stellar. His EQs are second to none. His mic pres are just class, man. It’s class-built stuff. It really is. I’ve spoken to George Massenburg once on a design flaw, something to do with the Digital 8 bus, because he had one of his plugins.
It was an EQ for the Digital 8 bus, and I called tech support to try and get a hold of somebody to speak to, and got an automated message. I left a message. I got a call back from tech support shortly thereafter, and the voice said, “Mike Waxman, please,” and I said, “Yeah. This is he speaking.” He says, “Yeah. Hi. This is George Massenburg. I understand you’re having a problem with one of my plugins,” and that was I thought one of my friends was putting on and I said, “George Massenburg is calling back from tech support from his company? This had to be impossible. All right, who is this really?” And he started laughing and he said, “No. It’s really George Massenburg.”
GRETCHEN HASSE: What was he doing on tech support?
MIKE WAXMAN: He was answering a call of a problem with something to do with one of his products, and he was deeply concerned. And he gave me his cell phone number. He wanted me to call and let me know how the progress of it. You know, it was something that had his on it, man. He wanted to make it right. He was awesome. So, for that alone, I have to give him some money and try and buy one of his products. If you’re listening, George, I’ll take something also too. I’m the guy essentially with the thing where we tracked down the noise that the plugin was making on the Digital 8 bus. You’ll probably never see this because, you know, you’re too busy. You weren’t too busy to answer tech support though so you’ll never know.
