Gearwire Q&A: Cubase SX - Cubase SX vs. Nuendo

June 09, 2006

What's the difference between Cubase SX and Nuendo?

Both programs use the same audio engine and are identical in almost every way (the GUI is essentially the same, but Cubase SX and Nuendo have slightly different "looks"). Nuendo does deliver added functionality for audio as it applies to film and television productions; it's ideally suited to those involved in post production and surround-sound projects.

Nuendo offers support for multiple workstations over local area networks, and it comes complete with software to manage network access for large-scale productions. Nuendo supports a host of multimedia file formats for workstations from SADie and Fairlight as well as audio-to-picture functions, hardware support and track sheets. It can act as a Sony 9-Pin Master enables it to control 9-pin devices, including analog and digital video decks, multitrack recorders and more.

Nuendo also offers a fourth mixer instance (Cubase SX has three) as well as a suite of diagnostic tools for surround-sound setups, including spectrum analysis, phase metering, test tone generators and more. Nuendo delivers a record sampling frequency of up to 192 kHz, and an advanced Cross Fade editor for applying special cross fade effects. It supports many surround formats (from 6.0 through 10.2) plus encoding functions for DTS, Dolby Digital and more.

I still keep on using the nuendo sx2 which is more reliable than the cubase sx2. The graphics seem to be exactly the same with a few differences. It works much better the nuendo sx2 if you use vista windows
