July 09, 2008
Radel Tanpura Digital

One of the more interesting little things we saw at Summer NAMM 2008 was the Radel Electronic Tanpura. It's a digital instrument made by India's premier digital music manufacturer that samples traditional drone and lets you manipulate it over a two octave range.

Drone on, Radel. Drone on.

CHRIS SHANNON: Hi. It’s Chris Shannon from SynergyHouse coming at you live from Nashville, Tennessee at the Summer NAMM Show. I want to show you an exciting new product from Radel, India’s premier manufacturer of electronic Indian instruments. This is a digital tanpura, which is a drone instrument that is used in classical Indian music to provide the sort of background humming sound that’s typical of Indian music. This, you can hear it here.

[CHRIS SHANNON PLAYING THE RADEL DIGITAL TANPURA]

It’s very authentic, digitally sampled, you can change the key to the raag that you’re playing simply by pushing the button. It covers almost two octaves so it’s suitable for male or female vocalists to sing with. It’s good for practicing but designed for live performance with memory presets. You can adjust it for the intonation and rhythms typical between Northern Indian versus Southern Indian music.

We are the exclusive distributor in the U.S. for Radel Products. This is just one of the products we have. We also have a product called the Digi-100 which is a digital tabla set which is the world’s first MIDI-compatible Indian instrument. So, it’s MIDI compatible. You can use it for live performance or for rehearsal. A drummer that has an electronic drum pad could trigger that on his set. Anyone with a keyboard could begin a raag or actually play tablas through their keyboard with authentic digital sound. So, again, SynergyHouse, Radel Electronic Indian Instruments.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
