Radial's UM930 Microphone

A look at Radial's UM930 Mic
Radial's UM930 is a pricey-but-fascinating little number. The UM930 is a dual-diaphragm mic, which according to Radial literature, is "mounted on separate elements to provide individual control over the applied voltages." This assures greater pattern control while also allowing the engineer to individually mix each element through separate preamps for true single point stereo or unlimited variations."

See it for yourself in Gearwire's video, shot on the floor of Winter NAMM 2007.

More info is at the Radial official site.

PETER JANIS: Hi. This is Peter Janis. You’re catching us all the way from Radial Engineering at the NAMM Show. Fabulous show. Very busy for us this year. Want to kind of go through some different products we used up at the show.

Gefell mics, as you may or may not be familiar with, been around since 1928, the original Neumann company is still making microphones today. At this show, we are introducing a new product that’s way up here. This is called the UM930. It’s an actual dual-diaphragm microphone. So it’s two of these little guys over here and one of these.

And what you can do here is like control the front and the back of the microphone separately. Full 1” diaphragm, front and back. Because I can control the front and the back separately I can create stereo mixes that are very interesting. I can do all kinds of stuff that in the past have not been possible with regular two-diaphragm microphones. M930, I believe you’re looking at a retail price of around $5,000.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
