Sanford And Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz Pedal Used By Surachai To Melt Faces

June 19, 2007
Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz Pedal Gives Surachai Edge in Performance

Surachai shows off the stomp box that creates his custom sound when performing as a metal act. Sonny, a friend of his, created the Sanford & Sonny Bluebeard Distortion/Fuzz Pedal. Even though this box looks small and innocent, it can drive heavy distortion through walls.

The key to this particular box is that it is a full-range pedal. Unlike guitar effects pedals and bass pedals, the Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz pedal encompasses the entire range of EQ. Be warned, though. This is not the innocent stompbox it appears to be, and is designed to take the paint off walls. Plus, it comes with custom artwork on the inside and hand written serial numbering on the outside.

Sounds Great!

Wow I'm sure that pedal would sound great IF YOU PLUGGED IT IN AND GAVE A FREAKIN DEMONSTRATION for this video. Oh, and I'm sure that Octopus with a top hat is really a cool picture too. Too bad you guys didn't have a screwdriver with you. WTF?!? Shut the video off for a second- go grab a screwdriver, take the cover off. Frame up a shot and resume recording. In other words, what was the point of this video? To tell us how cool soemthing is? OK, we'll just take your word that it is...

the pedal

By: bholland
well, there's the problem that we were in the back end of Sonoteque, a club, and that everything had to be wired into the main system. The promoter was late getting there, and Surachai really didn't have time to plug the thing in since he wasn't doing a metal set. We thought it would be cool to talk about it and throw it out there. It's the unfortunate side effect of shooting in the field under time constraints in a big venue.

you should do a follow up

By: Anonymouse (not verified)

you should do a follow up vid with a demo then.

i agree

By: bholland

at the moment, my hands are tied to do so since we have "covered" the pedal already. However, I might talk to surachai about doing a demo on my own time and recording the results. Maybe a performance?

aside from listening to mastodon and hidden hand for examples, i can provide one that has it running on guitar/bass/vox and synth work. as for the octopus with the hat, thats private. thedeepelement.com/surachai-gates.mp3

That's my pedal!!!!

Sonny is a blonde-haired hack. He talks alot, too. He used to be my friend--but this thing with the pedal just makes my stomach turn. Everyone is fooled by a rebadged BMP Complete Kit for $60 @ generalguitargadgets.com. He doesn't even paint it and puts it in a zip-lock baggie. I call shenanigans. SHENANIGANS! generalguitargadgets

Uhhh, you sell a kit. Read through the instructions! It's not exactly a breeze to assemble: Check out the first "step" Assembling the Circuit Board Here's what we have on our bench when we are assembling a board: A close-in bright light (desk lamp) Small Side cutters Wire strippers Soldering iron and stand Solder Hookup wire A small Magnifying glass Multimeter Circuit board and required parts (resistors, caps, etc) The project documentation Solder parts in this order: 1. Sockets (if needed) 2. Resistors 3. Capacitors 4. Diodes and transistors 5. ICs After the soldering is done, look at it under the bright light (through the magnifying glass if possible). It is helpful to keep an eye on the quality of the work as you go. Thats just the second page of 6. Most people don't have the time, know how or patience to build there own effects pedal. Seems like Sonny was ingenious enough to provide the Bluebeard for those who can't DIY. Perhaps you should provide Assembled Pedals as well as kits before you get all bitter and pissy.

It's funny. You seem to

It's funny. You seem to think rocket scientists build these pedals. C'mon...have you ever heard of skilled labor? Little old ladies build these things in China and Mexico...just like Fender Guitars. BTW, I don't think that the dude from General Guitar Gadgets actually posted. I think that it was some anonymous guy that is only trying to enlighten people that Sonny isn't an electrical engineering genius that invented a new pedal, just a sales person. He is certainly no Z.Vex. There are other posts that say that someone else (a kiddo) that does his assembly anyway. Fred

BILL HOLLAND: Hey everybody. Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I’m Bill Holland and I’m here with Justin McGrath...

JUSTIN MCGRATH: Hello.

BILL HOLLAND: ...and Surachai.

SURACHAI: Hello.

BILL HOLLAND: And we’re going to talk about a custom pedal now. Your friend made this pedal?

SURACHAI: Yes. His name is Sonny, and essentially with this is is a Big Muff clone, that giant, bulky Russian thing that everybody loves but essentially what this is is called a Blue Beard, and it’s full range which is kind of special because well I do synth work and those are full range, so it’s not like just bass. It’s not just guitars. So, essentially what happens is all these metal bands are having these things on everything. So like the band that uses it is Mastodon. They just went like really big, and a lot of engineers just keep it in the actual studio. But yeah it’s a fuzz pedal but it’s a brutal as hell and like it is essentially the only thing I use when doing my metal stuff, and actually I throw voices over it as well and, I mean, all the full-range stuff so essentially it does anything. But, yeah I mean like, it’s like written by him and it has like a serial number which this is like number 24, I don't know what they’re up to now like a couple of a hundred. And Sonny is like the nicest human being on the planet so much so that if I took this off, I wish I had my screwdriver with me, but like if you took this off and basically one like that, you would see that he drew a custom picture for me. It’s like -- Justin, would you describe it?

JUSTIN MCGRATH: It’s like a Blue Octopus or something.

BILL HOLLAND: Blue octopus? Okay.

SURACHAI: It’s like it’s a neon yellow background with an octopus with a top hat, and I mean that’s as metal as you can get, right? So --

BILL HOLLAND: That’s pretty damn metal.

SURACHAI: Oh wait. The best part of it is it’s just like blindingly blue, there you go, and this thing just like beams at you in the middle of your like dark ass setup. There you go.

BILL HOLLAND: That’s pretty dark, man. Okay. Well, lesson learned. If you’re making some Norwegian black metal, definitely pick up this pedal. Do we have a brand name for that or web site or anything?

SURACHAI: You can check Atomic Music online and they sell it through that web site. You can contact him through that web site as well, and this is called a Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz.

BILL HOLLAND: Fantastic. Well, thanks guys, and we will see you back at [PH] Sonitech at Gearwire.Com.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
