Juan Dias On Gearwire Cribs

Juan Dies invites us into his condo, which he pretty much modeled himself to be a great musical spot. He's got wall outlets by RCI Custom Products with XLR, quarter inch and RCA inputs -- which is great if you need to phantom power a microphone or a toaster.

This is seriously a sweet place, protected by a wall of masks to ward off interference demons, and it's bursting with so much musical equipment, I'm beginning to doubt if Juan even bothered to save space for luxury rooms like bathrooms or bedrooms.

[JUAN DIES PERFORMING WITH THE SONES DE MEXICO ENSEMBLE]

JUAN DIES: My name is Juan Dies. I’m a musician in the group Sones de Mexico ensemble. We specialize in Mexican traditional music on authentic instruments. And this is my house. Welcome.

It’s a condo. Notice the number is a 414 for those who, for those who love that microphone.

As we come in, first we have a collection of masks that are a -- they’re going to ward off evil and get rid of all interference and vibrations that will get in the way. This was a house that a, that I was fortunate enough to get as an empty shell and I was able to build out to my own specifications. So one of the things I did is I ran a snake through the various rooms of the house and I’ve had these plates. They’re custom plates you can choose your own numbering system and they’re really good about it. So we have a, you know, we have a B and Cs that turn easily into RCA plugs. Then we have a, I have a couple of combos which could go either way as headphones or you could plug additional microphones. You have six microphone inputs in each room. And this one has also a telephone and Ethernet just in case.

So this is the living room where we’ve been talking today. We setup our little rehearsal here or do different things.

And then we have this little den which I’ve turned into a little workshop. This is where I work on, on my instruments so I don’t ruin the kitchen table. And you know I could do some soldering here or simple woodwork, changing strings. I build cases, you know, and for our instruments. And here’s all the collection of guitars. I have about 25 different guitars of different types, of different shapes. Some of them you could see in the poster for the band. Each member of the band has a collection of instruments of their own so when we put all of ours together, we have over 70 different instruments.

To save on the cost of having the anvil cases made, we you know, I’ve begun to make just simple plywood cases just for, you know, to put in our vans so we can stack things up and keep them from getting damaged. It’s an investment over time to try to get the right cases for everything. Sometimes our cases are more expensive than the instruments themselves.

This is where all the sound panel terminates. You can see the, all the terminals for the house, the living room. And you know this is a work in progress. At this point I just have it hooked up to a simple computer and a small Mackie. But, there really is, there’s room to grow with this and this is just a little project studio.
