Reason 3.0 Tutorial: Fatten Up Your Drums

July 05, 2007
Propellerheads Reason 3.0 and Pumping Up Your Drum Kit

Drums seem to always be the elusive element to programming in Reason. Even with years of experience from version 1.0 on, I still struggle with this. I hear tracks that get press in music magazines that still sound like they were recorded with a flat ReDrum.

Given that, I have presented a quick solution to at least beef up your drums. This tutorial is meant to serve as a jumping off point for more detailed work. Using this basic compression and mixing setup, anyone should be able to create better sounding drums.

Reason is designed by Propellerheads.

constructive criticism

By: bholland
That was pretty vague. Can you elaborate on that. You could tell us it sucks, or (just a thought) you could give us ways to improve it. We based this off a lot of the after effects and flash tutorials on creative cow and Cold hard flash. Let me know what is not working for you, so we can fix it.

Not a tutor!!

To be honest i have watched alot and i mean alot of tutorials and this does not cut the mustard...it reminds me of when i first started using Reason and thats exactly wot this dude was doing....didn't sound or look like he knew wot he was doing. My advice....take time out to watch wot others are doing...and improve on that.

Do u actually know what ur talking about? Sounds awful!

yes, I do

By: bholland
I actually do. This was my first try at using Snapz Pro X. It gave me some problems while capturing, so I was mildly distracted. I have been producing with Reason since version 1.0, and have scored a number of short films, received an award from the Kennedy Center for Sound Design and Music Composition (using Reason), done numerous remixes, and recently had some work published in a Multimedia project from a New York Spoken Word artist. I've been using it for a while, but I got thrown by the jittery capture software. Now, we've resolved that.

MClass Master Combi Bypassed

By: Hostgrabber (not verified)
Hey, did you realize, that in the middle of the tutorial you had bypassed the MClass Master Combi "Dance" Preset and that all your knob rotating was for nothing? cu Hostgrabber

ya see, rudy

By: bholland
Here's the thing. I generally don't like using the "Dance" preset until I've mixed my entire track down. This is mainly because of how much compression is involved. I often feel that I can't hear the whole mix while it is applied, so I mix everything in the mixer first, then apply the Combi preset. Really, to each his own, but now that we have Reason 4 in the office, I plan on getting back into doing some of these. Perhaps one can focus on the combinators.
