Rickenbacker 4003 - Gearwire Labs Video
February 20, 2007
The Rickenbacker 4003 has looks and a sound that are as much a part of rock and roll as tight pants and facial hair. In this video Dan explains a little about how the bass gets its sound and also gives some demonstrations of the legendary tone. Check out the video.

4003 Review
It's nice to have this video as an example of what a Rickenbacker 4003 bass sounds like, but the reviewer neglects three of the most important ways to adjust the sound of a Rickenbacker bass:
a) By changing individual pickup volumes, you can dramatically change the tone.
b) Like other basses, where one plucks/picks the strings (e.g. by the bridge, closer to the neck pickup, etc.) changes the sound a lot.
c) He also doesn't mention the fact that the 4003 is capable of stereo output, so that it's possible to send separate signals from the bass (neck) and treble (bridge) pickups. This is called "ric-o-sound" and it is the way Chris Squire and Geddy Lee got their bass to sound both bassy and trebly at the same time. You need two amps, or an a-b-y pedal, but the sound is amazing.
One more thing: flatwounds. Rickenbacker basses were designed for flats, and if you want to sound like Paul McCartney that will get you in the right direction (on any bass, really).
Lastly, Rickenbacker is pronounced Ric-en-BACK-er. Back, not Bach... :)
