Rode M1 Is Testing My Fidelity

November 10, 2008
Rode M1

So many things from Australia have tested my faithfulness to my relationships: Naomi Watts threatens my relationship with my girlfriend, Foster's threatens my love of Budweiser, and Vegemite threatens my relationship with all other food substances. Now I can add the Shure SM58 to my "endangered relationships" list; Rode has released the new M1 cardioid dynamic stage microphone, and how am I not supposed to be tempted to "experiment"?

Like the more familiar SM58, the Rode M1 is a highly-detailed dynamic capsule built in an extremely rugged metal housing. Its cardioid pickup pattern is configured for high feedback rejection, and its element is of a very high output as compared to most passive microphones.

The capsule is also shock-attenuated for minimal handling noise, and the high-impact grill contains a multi-layer pop-filter for reducing plosives. Every little thing about the M1, in fact, reminds me of my current live mic of choice. It's just that this mic is new.

I'm caught in the classic conundrum: do I stick with the tried-and-true Shure-thing, or do I give in to the impulse to try something new, fully understanding that I'm suffering from "grass-is-always-greener" syndrome? Didn't Nick Hornby write a novel about this? Or several?

Pricing and availability for the Rode M1 are still TBA.

Rode M1

I've been trying the M1 myself, and are surely convinced that there is absolutely no question about the quality and differences between the M1 and for example the SM58/Beta58. Just like the Rode M2, the M1 has a very robust and powerful output, not to mention the sound of the thing. It has much more detail, more high tones, and more power in the low-end region of my voice than an SM58 or Beta58.

I would absolutely recommend everyone trying an M1.
They come in cute looking sixpacks by the way....

i bought a rode M1 in australia for 150 au. i was using a SM58 but to be honest i think the rode is better. my voice sounds clearer, it didnt break up as early i didnt have much feedback. the guy in the store said ther M1 and SM58 are the same. M1 is better, plus you get a ten year warranty, lets see shure do that...

I love the M1. I use it everyday when I busk in Melbourne Australia. I hand hold it for harmonica and away I go with a stomp box and tamborine. It gives my listeners great pleasure. It has helped my CD sales too. I have been through several other mics over the years which didn't last the distance because they weren't as robust. They simply died.

The M1 has a beautiful warm airy tone and the clarity is great.
