Roger Nichols Frequal-izer EQ, Finis Limiter
July 18, 2006
Ever recorded a vocal track in two different places, then spent a week pulling your hair out trying to make the two takes sound like a single session? The Frequal-izer is a finite impulse-response equalizer that's designed with just this problem in mind. Show it the frequency response of two recordings, and it compares the two to give you the difference. Apply this "difference" curve to the target recording to make it sound a whole lot more like the source. Pretty cool. There's also a smooth function that lets you prettify the response curve from a rough sketch you create and an "Invert" button that lets you notch out a problem frequency once you've found it by sweeping a boost. And, according to Roger, Frequal-izer works with absolutely no phase shift.
Also included is a discussion of Finis, Nichols' limiter plug that performs a special trick to preserve the high end even on ultra-squashed tracks.
