Rova Remix Contest: Remix Rova Saxophone Quartet Music, Win Music
Enter the Rova remix contest to help the Rova Saxophone Quartet celebrate two major milestones: Rova’s upcoming 33⅓ Anniversary concert with special guests DJ Olive and DJ P-Love; and the release of The Receiving Surfaces, a limited-edition live LP of last summer’s landmark collaboration with John Zorn. Rova, Zorn, music, oh my.
The Rova remix contest involves rethinking, remixing, and remaking the tracks from Rova’s quartet recording of Steve Adam’s piece, "Flip Trap." The individual tracks for "Flip Trap" as well as a number of files from "Rovamatic" (the Rova-samples CD ROM) will be freely available to you for all your remixing needs.
Since the 33⅓ Anniversary Concert features two turntablists remixing Rova live, and since the quartet has a new vinyl release, the members figured that they might as well add yet another good thing to the mix and see who in the improvised music and DJ communities would and could take a crack at rethinking the recorded original "Flip Trap."
With this contest, the quartet invites you to totally overhaul the piece and truly make it your own: "Dig into the individual parts and pieces, chop, flip, rearrange, corrode, and remix them to your heart’s content. Rova dub? Ambient Rova? Whatever. We want to hear what you got. We're encouraging remixes that use Rova samples as the only source material, so let us know if you've pulled that off. But if something else seems absolutely essential to include, go for it."
The winning remix will be chosen this summer in August 2011. After the top three entries are selected, the winning remix will be voted for by Rova's friends on Facebook. The winner will receive a free copy of Rova’s most recent release, Planetary, which includes "Flip Trap" of course, plus a copy of the limited-edition LP The Receiving Surfaces featuring John Zorn with Rova, and the collectible CD ROM Rovamatic -- a sample library featuring the Rova Saxophone Quartet. The top three remixers will also receive a copy of Planetary.
All submitted tracks will be hosted on rova.org for the length of the contest, and the top three remixes will live on the Web site for an additional six months thereafter.
For the chance to win all these Rova goodies, submit your remix no later than July 31st. Complete rules, terms, and fine print are available at rova.org.
