M-Audio StudioPro 3 And Samson MediaOne 4a: Bill Holland Reviews Monitors With Help From Bill Holland

Samson MediaOne 4a and M-Audio StudioPro 3 comparison

We recently received a pair of Samson MediaOne 4a computer monitors and decided to put them to the test against the M-Audio StudioPro 3 pair we had in studio. Bill Holland compares the two sets side by side with some advice about the usage of these monitors compared to reference monitors.

On an unrelated note, Bill Holland visited Clonaid last weekend. I wonder how that turned out.

So... What was the reasoning behind not using a mic that is actually close to flat? Granted, auditioning speakers in this kind of a forum isn't anywhere close to good critical listening: source-speakers-mic-mic pre-A/D-processing(I hope you kept the EQ flat)-D/A-my speakers-my ears. Why would you not want the most transparent, flat mic possible?

You've got it right there with the internet being a bad forum to review monitors. I was wondering myself how I was going to do it, since I find it's best to test them out in a space (i.e. go to your dealer and listen to them side by side). I probably should have used our Earthworks m30 if I was looking for the flattest signal, but my thought process was that a majority of our audience knows what a 57 sounds like. Thus, they would be able to somewhat compensate for the compression and not actually being in the space. In retrospect, using a more transparent mic would have probably been a good call.

To get a good feel for these, you really need to listen to them yourself. This is more of a basic rundown of specs and comparison between the two models than an accurate representation of their sound.
