Samson VR88 Velocity Ribbon Mic Has no Facial Hair, Just Like Owen
March 11, 2009
We here at the Gearwire office always love to hear Owen sing, especially when it's through a finely constructed, if reasonably priced, microphone like the Samson VR88 Velocity Ribbon Mic. Here, Mr. O,Malley squares it off against the AKG C 3000 B, a similarly priced condenser mic. Hear the difference and decide for yourself!

Loved your video
Owen,
Loved your video with the A/B comparison of the Samson VR88 Velocity Ribbon vs the AKG 3000. Excellent! You did a great job of showcasing the difference in response -- and reasons the uninitiated might consider a ribbon versus a condenser.
I'd love to see you compare the AT 4033 with a Marshall MXL 990. They're both large condensers, but the comparison would be instructive.
I bought a pair of the MXL's (made in China, and priced at just $69 ea)after a Chicago music studio sound engineer showed me his "new secret." I was astonished at how well the MXL compared with a neary Rode.
So I bought an MXL and began using it. But I still lusted after an AT 4033, because other voice talents told me that it was a great "step-up." (Not a step up to the level of U-87s or 414s I encounter in studios, but an "affordable" upgrade for home auditions, etc.)
Well I invested in two 4033's. And before tearing down the MXLs, I recorded an A/B comparison. When I played back the audio, I couldn't believe my ears. I couldn't tell the mikes apart! (I've been in broadcasting or voice work for 35 years so I do have "ears.")
What a shock! It instantly called into question the wisdom of my $800 investment. So while I use and love my new 4033's, the experience gave me pause.
I'm wondering if you'd have the same experience. And if you did -- if GearWire would (frankly) have the courage to show that comparison online.
I look forward to hearing back from you -- or better yet -- seeing that comparison.
Many Thanks,
Bob Smith, voice talent

Ribbons...
I just bought two Apex 205 ribbon mics with the intention of having them modified by Michael Joly of OktavaMod.com. Although I wasn't expecting much from such a cheap mic, they actually sounded pretty good as I decided to try them before I had them modified.
Although there may be some issues with cheap foreign made ribbon mics - sagging elements, cheap wiring, etc., they can actually sound pretty good through good equipment, if they are assembled well. Although I'm getting my two 205's modified, I'm considering getting another 205, or the Samson, to keep around for a "dirty" ribbon. Would love to see a shootout between the Apex 205 / 210 and the Samson VR88.
