Schwartz Engineering & Design Laser-Optic Microphone Prototype: Is There Anything Lasers Can't Do?
October 20, 2009
As soon as we heard talk about a "laser microphone" prototype, we knew we had to head over to the Schwartz Engineering & Design booth at AES to check it out.
Founder and principal engineer David Schwartz tasked his son -- and capable engineer in his own right -- Daniel with developing prototypes for the microphone. Daniel conducted the demo, while David told us a bit about the inspiration behind the particulate-cloud-as-diaphragm concept. Schwartz Engineering & Design are currently seeking companies to license the U.S. patent on their new microphone technology.

I'd just like to say as a MSc Music Engineering & production student, its a really good idea, however it needs to be developed and researched so you can get the best out of this mic. As you know, microphones have been around for sometime, & may i add, not a success when they first came out! so keep at it & good on you. Musicman73
Laser Optic Mic
Bad ass I want one
Pretty cool!
At first glance you may be inclined to think this guy is a dork, until you hear him speak. This guy is a genious. I do hope this idea is researched further, as it really isn't much different to the workings of a CD player; modulating a light beam.
In all, this is very cool.
Definitely an interesting
Definitely an interesting concept, but it looks far from practical in its current stage. If it is made into how the engineers envisioned it, it could easily revolutionise the microphone industry.
