Universal Music Group and Serato Whitelabel Delivery Network: Digital Music Service For DJs
Back in the day, DJs used to subscribe to music services that would send vinyl LPs for them to keep long enough to outplay the single / albums before exchanging them for the next latest and greatest release. This week, Universal Music Group (UMG) and Serato have announced that they will be offering the same kind of service via Whitelabel.net, which will deliver secure, digital promotional music directly to DJs.
The collaboration between UMG and Serato is the first of its kind between a major recording company and a service specifically designed for DJs, according to Serato. Over the course of the past year, the Serato Whitelabel Delivery Network has delivered 3 million tracks to over 40,000 DJs, and it hopes to deliver even more with the help of UMG.
When you sign in to the Whitelabel service, you will receive top radio and club hits quickly and securely, in a format meant to prevent illegal use or distribution. The Whitelabel MP3 format is a high-quality audio file that is ID-tagged with artist and song information, and pre-analyzed for use with Serato DJ software.
These files will play as a low-fi preview in any MP3 player, and as a high-quality version when played through Serato-approved hardware. This beats the limits placed on iTunes downloads; at least with the Whitelabel MP3s, you can still transfer and hear the tracks within other players, albeit in a poorer quality, and there are no limits to the number of times you can move the files.
