Shure KSM 42, Shure KSM 44a: New Shure Condenser Microphones Announced
New to the KSM-line of studio microphones are the Shure KSM42 and Shure KSM44a. Both mics are solid-state, large-diaphragm condensers, but each is intended for distinct applications.
The KSM42 (above left, top; $799 US street) is a fixed-cardioid condenser intended primarily for tracking vocals. According to Shure's Category Manager for Wired Products, Chad Wiggins, "From the capsule and the preamp to the housing and the accessories, we designed the KSM42 to deliver a natural environment for sophisticated performance and recording.” The mic provides a wide dynamic range and a smooth proximity control for use with a wide variety of singers, even those who can't help but move around when tracking in-studio (we all know that guy/gal). The KSM42 comes with a bundle of accessories specific to vocal recording, including a combination shock-mount / pop-filter for quick setup.
The KSM44a (above left, bottom; $999 US street) is functionally similar to the KSM44 but with some improved performance specs. This multi-pattern condenser (cardioid, omni, figure-eight) now has an additional seven db of dynamic range, thanks to lowered self-noise and improved SPL handling. With the addition of a three-position low-frequency filter and extra sub-17hz filter, the KSM44a is a real workhorse, excelling at numerous studio and live reinforcement applications.
Both the KSM42 and KSM44a will be shipping by the end of July 2010.
