Shure WL51 and Countryman Mics Vie for the Tolerant Love of Ian Anderson
August 17, 2009
The obvious question one wants to ask Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, is how in the world he ever thought the flute would work in a rock band. When you ask him this question, you get an answer much like the following interview with Gearwire's Pat Ogle.
Anderson has his choice between the Shure WL51 and Countryman Mics. Both have good and bad points, and though Anderson has suggested improvements, neither is perfect. It's a shame that the "rock flautist" pool is rather small, otherwise we might be getting somewhere with that.

Nice information, Many thanks to the author. It is incomprehensible to me now, but in general, the usefulness and significance is overwhelming. Thanks again and good luck.
Long Time Tull Fan
In 1969 I went to a Led Zeppelin concert at the San Diego Sports Arena.I was 14 years old with my big brother. I left that concert not a Zeppelin Fan but a Tull fan for life. I didn't even know they were the first band. Through the years I've seen Tull maybe a dozen times live. My wife and I will be at Caesars Atlantic City this Saturday and are really looking foward to it. Thankyou Ian for so many years of enjoyment. And thankyou Martin too. Regards, Mark Hannapple, Branchville NJ

What kind of flute is he playing?
His embouchure is amazing. What kind of flute is he playing? for several years now it's been a thick-walled flute, probably japanese? not yamaha or powell for sure. anyhow, he has fantastic control over embouchure to make all those notes speak and jump to different octaves, interject so many special effects, and execute so many amazing riffs, but the riffs are another story. My hero. Ian, you're amazing, the creativity boggles the mind. The talent is one-of-a-kind.

Hey IanAndersonFan ...
If you check out JethroTull.com you'll find a page dedicated to Ian discussing all of his equipment. He even talks about his "kitchen Flute". If you haven't checked it out, he does discuss all of the brands he uses.
Loved this interview. It was interesting to hear his candid comparison of the WL51 and the Countryman. As a flutist, I recently purchased the Countryman Isomax, along with a wireless connection. Still in the learning phase, but it works very well. But as with all things, one thing is a plus, but then there are consequences... now that I am mobile on stage, I am roaming the stage and leaving the vicinity of the monitors near the singing mic... Wooops, suddenly it's harder to hear myself with all of the rest of the ambient sound on stage. Now I know why he uses in ear monitors. LOL Live and Learn.
