Shure SM81: Stereo Mic Techniques On Piano
November 05, 2007
Recording in stereo can really bring out the depth of an instrument within a room. In this tutorial Dan shows you two different ways that you can record a grand piano in stereo. For this particular video the mics are the Shure SM81's which find their way into a lot of great recordings.
There will be two samples for each method. A chromatic run up all the keys as well as a chord progression that will later be used in a song will demonstrate the differences between the XY and ORTF stereo techniques. Stay tuned for future videos to hear how this stereo recording fits into a dense mix.

Please don't confuse people.
Please don't confuse people. You are using a near coincident technique here, not ORTF.
ORTF is strictly defined as 7 inches between capsules and angle of 110 degrees.
Any variation on this is not ORTF and should not be referred to as such.
Thank you
