Hughes And Kettner Statesman Brings A Populist Message To The Masses
July 02, 2008
Larry Bell from Yorkville sound got Gearwire into the press pool to check out what their new Statesman series all-tube combo amps had to say for themselves. Expect the press to fawn over these upstarts: the "budget friendly" amps feature Celestion speakers and are all manufactured in the same German facilities as the higher-end Hughes and Kettner amps.
There is hope for the future; Statesman for president. Oh, wait, they're born in Germany. DAMN Article Two of our constitution!

H & K Statesman
Sometimes things differ between countries, but I am in Australia and the 20W Dual EL84 Statesman is Class A, not A-B like this guy says. It also has an Eminence Rock Cream speaker (not Celestion).
It's not a bad amp, but it effectively has no reverb, despite technically having an Accutronics Spring Reverb built-in. Not a tank BTW, so you can't just swap it out.
When you see EL84, don't think Vox. They are shooting for Fender-esque clean and Marshall JCM800-esque drive sounds.
Love Gearwire. Keep up the good work.
thanks for the input
maybe we'll have to get one into the studio to test it out ourselves.
Hope you do
This is my first valve amp, and I really hope you do test it out. Would be interested in what sounds you got out of it, the lack of 'verb and whether the bass is boomy on clean. Amazing difference made by EQ. Not used to them being so interactive.
Maybe it's supposed to be a real rock amp despite the looks?
If you guys dialed in some tones (eg for jazz, twangin) and showed the settings that would be fantastic. Interested in your comments on it anyway, as always.
Please email me if you do it, or if you have comments on it. Thanks again for the great site.
