Songworks Mahaffay AW99: Bringin' Power To Your Cabs Like Three The Hard(wired) Way
The new Mahaffay AW99 offers an unprecedented triple output power section that can drive three amps in any configuration you can imagine.
The amp's designer, Tris Mahaffay, was inspired by the multi-amp setups that were common in the heyday of power-rock, the late 70s. In an attempt to recreate the effect that multiple full-stacks have on your sound, but not the effect they have on you wallet or spine, Mahaffay designed the AW99 with three discrete power output stages, and each stage has its own master volume AND effects loop, meaning it's the closest you can get to having three half-stacks on stage without having to bribe "local high school dudes" with "pizza and girls" as Tris apparently did back in the day.
Each of the power amps is solid-state -- meaning you can mix and match cabs without having to worry about rebiasing for every setup -- and is rated 33 watts. On the front end of the amp is Songwork's exclusive hand wired 1/4 watt tube pre/power amp circuit (power tube-like distortion in the preamp stage), adding up to a total of 99.25 watts in a 22 lb amp. Not too shabby.
The amps list for only $1195 US, which is pretty reasonable for a hand-built, triple output tube amp. Of course, they are made one at a time, so you might be waiting a while.
While you wait, you might want to read the story about the inspiration behind the AW99 in Tris' own words. Take note of his strange grudge against Eddie Van Halen. There's more to that animus than blown tone circuits, I'd wager.

sounds almost like a
novelty amp to me.
just a first impression, of course.
it sounds like he set out to make an amp that can drive three cabs, and then thought, "i'll throw in some preamp distortion to call it a 'tube' amp." -not that preamp distortion cant sound as fantastic as an all tube, tube rectifier, vintage amp of yesteryear- sort of, but altogether the amp just seems like something made to entertain the thought of three stacks of sound- something you can get from other, more 'authentic' (for a lack of a better word), amplifiers.
again, just a first impression. i'd have to hear it first. and the price looks great compared to what amps are going for these days.
agreed
def skeptical about the "power stage distortion in the preamp stage" claim, but I certainly wouldn't pass up the chance to hear this thing though a trio of 4x12's
