Sontronics DM-1T, Sontronics DM-1S, Sontronics DM-1B: Miking The Kit
Several new drum microphones are now available from Sontronics: the DM-1T and DM-1S pencil condensers for tom and snare drum, and the DM-1B condenser mic for kick drum and bass.
The DM-1T and DM-1S are small-diaphragm pencil-style condenser microphones designed to work on toms (DM-1T) and snares (DM-1S). With a cardioid polar pattern and switchable -15 dB pad, the characteristics of each mic have been tailored to pick up specific nuances from the different drums, according to the manufacturer. Each microphone comes with a metal drum mount and mic clip.
DM-1T and DM-1S features and specs:
- Small-diaphragm condenser microphones
- Available separately, each supplied with a metal drum mount and screw clamp
- Covered by lifetime warranty
- Road tested by producer Flood
- Designed slightly differently to capture the specific characteristics of tom (DM-1T) and snare (DM-1S)
- Response: 30 Hz to 20 kHz
- Polar pattern: Cardioid
- Impedance: <200 Ohms
- Equivalent noise level: 14 dB (A-weighted)
- Max SPL (for 0.5% THD @ 1,000 Hz): 135 dB (with -15 dB pad switched in)
- Power source: Phantom power 48V +/- 4V
- Connector: 3-pin XLR
As the bigger of the three mics, the DM-1B is a large-diaphragm, end-fire condenser microphone that has been designed specifically to capture and reproduce the various characteristics of a kick drum: the beater click, the heavy thump, the boomy decay, and so forth. This large-diaphragm, end-fire condenser microphone can cope with up to 150 dB (with the -15 dB pad switched in) and comes in an aluminium flightcase. Although it was designed specifically for kick drums, the DM-1B can also be used on bass instruments and bass guitar cabinets. According to Sontronics, it will perform equally well in the studio and in live applications.
Main features and specs of the DM-1B:

- Supplied with its yoke-style shockmount in a sturdy aluminum flightcase
- Road tested by producer Flood
- Ideal for kick drum and other bass instruments, especially bass guitar cabinets
- Response: 20 Hz to 20 kHz
- Polar pattern: Cardioid (end-fire)
