Soundcraft Notepad Series: Compact Multipurpose Mixers Released

November 11, 2009
Soundcraft Notepad Series of small multipurpose mixers, the Notepad 102, 124, and 124FX, feature four stereo line inputs.

Write this down: the Soundcraft Notepad series of small multipurpose mixers is back. The Notepad 102, 124, and 124FX models combine EQ technology with the GB30 mic preamp in a compact and solid chassis.

Each 124 model has four mono mic / line inputs, while the Notepad 102 has just two. All models sport four stereo line inputs, and can be applied toward a range of mixing projects, such as in home recording, small band or cabaret PA systems, AV presentation systems, small broadcast edit suites, educational lectures, and general contracting.

Moreover, the Notepads offer a highpass filter on the mono inputs, a 60 mm fader for the mix output selectable sensitivity of +4 dBu or 1- dBv on each stereo input (for Notepad 124 models only), multisegment LED metering on the mix output, and a headphone monitoring output.

What differentiates the 124 from the 124FX is -- you guessed it -- the effects controls. The Notepad 124FX's integral digital effects processor has a feed from every input, as well as more than 100 effects, including a pink noise and test setting. The FX control can also be used to set delay tap tempo. On the Notepad 124, however, the FX send is replaced by a standard AUX send with a dedicated output. Both the 124 and the 124FX provide a recording output of the mix on RCA / Phono connectors in addition to a stereo input for CD playback and other such uses.

Newbie Question

By: Tom (not verified)

Why are the Soundcraft Notepad series mixers not recommended for use in recording situations? I was thinking of adding a little mixer between source and a Tascam DP-008 to sort of "improve", or at least tinker with, the sound, but have yet to find something. My idea seems to be unusual or ill-advised based on the fact that nobody seems to do that. What am I missing (besides the obvious)? Thanks for any help.

Tom, Mixers normally use Direct Outputs to take each channel separately to a multitrack recorder. The Soundcraft Notepad mixers do not have Direct Outputs and that will be why Soundcraft do not recommend them for recording use. As the Tascam DP-008 can only handle 2-track simultaneous recording you will be fine with a Soundcraft Notepad, using the mix outputs.
