Sound Devices 788T Provides Thirty Hours Of Eight Track Recording For The On-Location Insomniac
Usually, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but Sound Devices has let some NAB show hijinks slip. It's not as juicy as an episode of "Desperate Housewives," but anyone starving for gossip on multitrack recorders will love the all new eight-track 788T.
The 788T is built for on-location productions, featuring a scandalously expanded input / output section. It's got eight microphone inputs, really putting the boots to eight-track devices that only have a meager pair. And to take care of its octet of ins, it's housed in a stainless-steel and aluminum chassis while weighing in at less than four pounds.
Sound Devices claims that it's roughly the size of a "hard-backed mystery novel," which by my calculations is slightly smaller than your standard NY Times Best Seller Fiction novel and somewhat larger than a paperback romance novel. For more of Sound Devices' claims, managing director Jon Tatooles says:
“Our production sound customers are using more isolated tracks and have been asking for a machine with more than four tracks without a size, weight, and cost penalty. The 788T brings a substantial increase in flexibility while taking advantage of all the strengths of our current 7-Series recorders.”
The 788T also packs a meaty 160 GB hard drive for up to 30 hours of recording in uncompressed 24-bit audio files. If you plan on recording for longer than 30 hours, worry not. You can add CompactFlash cards and use Firewire to send data to other storage devices.
