Orange County Drums And Percussion: The Clear Acrylic Kit of Frank Zummo
For those not in the know, Street Drum Corps are a, for lack of a better term, "punk" percussion band. Pretty much all of what they do revolves around percussion instruments, some traditional and some less so. They also employ a Moog Theremin. Drummer (one of the three) Frank Zummo took some time to chat with Gearwire about his Orange drum kit.
The kit consists of a 22"x22" Bass Drum, 12"x6" Fast Tom w Gauger Silver Rims mount, 16"x14" Floor Tom w/ Gauger Silver Rims Mount,20"x20" Gong Drum (Wood- Flat Black) and a 14"x7" Snare (chrome over wood w/ small holes, die cast hoops.
"OCDP are an amazing drum company! They can create anything that you dream up! They build us all custom drums and finishes. They sound amazing! The staff is amazing and part of the SDC family!"
Zummo's set is a clear acrylic one.
"This is my first acrylic kit and I love it! They are so loud and huge sounding! I love the response you get from them." he says. "Everything about this kit is top notch, nothing bad at all. My kick drum is a monster, it's 22"x22". This is the first long kick I have used and it's a cannon! I have used this kit on two tours and two recording sessions and the sound engineers love the kit and the kick drum."
And the monster kick is not the only drum Zummo employs for those deep rumbling sounds.
"We played clubs, outdoor amphitheaters, theaters and arenas ,and the kit works in all those situations. I use a 20" wood gong drum as a second floor tom," he says. "It's a kick drum with legs, used as a floor tom. It sounds really deep and huge, almost like an 808 bass drop. I play that drum a lot in SDC. Adam also has one on his setup."
Zummo's snare was made custom, specifically to compliment his kit.
"My kit is acrylic but my snare is chrome over 20-ply wood with four small holes. It's a monster!" he says.
As you might expect, from the nature of the band, Zummo also uses some "found object" percussion. These include and oil drum and a tire rim.
"The oil drum and tire rim give me the classic industrial Street Drum Corps sound. For four years we didn't use a standard drum kit in SDC. The main kit was plastic barrels, trash cans and oil drums," says Zummo. "When we added a kit, I wanted to have those trash elements incorporated into my kit. Having the trash and regular drums gives me a lot of great textures."
The band is currently in the studio recording their major label debut for DGC / Interscope. It will be released in 2009. The band will also be playing a special show at the Grove of Anaheim as part of the NAMM show after party with Papa Roach.
