Roger Sadowsky Vintage P Bass With P/J Pickups: The Monogamous Bass Of Stu Cook

Stu Cook, best known as the bassist for Creedence Cleawater Revival, recently released music from his 90s "super-group", Jackdawg. Jackdawg consisted of Cook, Clover guitarist, John McFee and the late Doobie Brothers drummer Keith Knudson. This release comes from sessions in the late 80s and early 90s that have just been released by Sonic Past Music.

Cook has been playing his instrument for over 40 years. Ergo, an aspiring bassist out there might want to know what he plays.

And what is this magical instrument? It comes from Roger Sadowsy -- a Sadowsky NYC.

"I am playing a coral salmon pink vintage P with P/J pickups. The body is alder, and the fingerboard is Brazilian rosewood," says Cook. "I prefer the balanced body shape of the precision bass, the sound of the split pickup, and the darker, more vintage sound of the alder / rosewood combination."

After playing many basses, over many years, we wanted to know why this bass? What is special about it?

"Without a doubt my Sadowsky is the finest bass I've ever played. A Modulus Genesis was my main bass for several years, but I wanted a 34" scale instrument, and the Sadowsky had been on my short list for a while, so . . . " he says. "It is the lightest, most resonant, easiest playing bass in my collection, and when amplified it just gets better."

Sadowsky basses come with different options with regard to wood, body style and pick ups.

"The pickups are standard Sadowsky P/J. I think they are made by Nordstrand," he says. "The pole pieces on the split pup are angled instead of evenly spaced. I think this is to accommodate more winding than previous models."

Cook's bass is also a five string model (yet another choice for the discriminating Sadowsky player).

"I started playing fives in 1988 to prevent the bottom end from becoming the territory of the keyboard player. It turns out to be more fun to play a five, too." says Cook.

And if you needed more of an endorsement of this instrument; it is Cook's ONLY bass -- studio, road or living room.

"I'm monogamous -- I only play one bass at a time. There is only one best. I've never recorded with this bass, but listen every concert with Westone UM2 earplugs, and the sound of the Aguilar DI and the miked cabinet (out of phase) tell me that it will record better than it sounds onstage.

He does plan to step out on this monogamy soon.

"I'm definitely going to get another Sadowsky, but can't decide which color." says Cook.
