SoundField SPS200 Zephyx Kit: The Quiet Bird In The Cage Hears Everything
The SPS200 is one microphone that has widespread use for location recording, given its accessibility as a software-operated mic system for a laptop-based recording environment. With its software component being compatible with a majority of VST hosts, this microphone system makes it easy to record things such as live performances as you hear them in the context of its immediate environment. However, you're not always satisfied recording indoors and there are times that you need to get out of those sheltered (even cloistered) spaces to capture what the outdoors has to offer. The SoundField SPS200 Zephyx Kit is that SPS200 revision meant to go out and face those field situations.
The SPS200 Zephyx Kit has at its heart a shorter bodied SPS200 called the SPS200-SB which is fitted into the supplied Zephyx suspension mount. Like all SoundField microphones, the SPS200-SB is a multi-capsule microphone that enables it to capture audio in three dimensions and creates output in a variety of formats including mono, stereo, M&S, and phase-coherent 5.1 surround. The SPS200 does not have a separate decoder but instead allows the user to determine the output in post-production via a cross-platform computer plugin called Surround Zone (VST, TDM).
In this system, the SPS200-SB is mounted on the Zephyx floating cage that mechanically decouples the microphone from the supporting boom or stand which in effect eliminates handling noise. This cage can then be fitted, depending on the situation, with different kinds of windshields such as a dual-layer fabric or a fur-type windjammer. Further taking that handling noise out of the equation, the SPS200-SB is also fitted with a 28-cm 'flying lead' that acts as an anti-vibration cable inside the cage.
