Takamine PCF-95

The Takamine PCF-95 guitar is part of the Santa Fe series. This particular guitar belongs to Patrick Ogle, who is planning on fixing up some of the problems he has with this guitar.

In this video, Patrick overviews the guitar and its problems, and in upcoming videos, he takes it to Third Coast Guitars to see what fixing these problems would entail.

Third Coast is a joke! There work is lacking to say the least. I recently brought my American standard tele in to fix some crappy solder work I did. They charged me for it and did not touch a thing on my first inspection.I brought it back and one of the guys couldn't believe they did that but still charged me for the pot. They also talked me in to a setup which was a horrible decision. My axe now has major fret buzz and the setup was horrible. I guess it's my fault to I never had it setup it was fine but being a few years old I thought why not...Bad idea

you never had your guitar set up?

By: pogle

and you think it was a bad idea to have it set up? And if there is a buzz and you were unhappy with the set up...get someone else to set it up to take away the buzz? I mean a set up isn't permanent.....I have a hard time thinking that they (or pretty much any shop) couldn't do a basic sort of set up a Telecaster...tell us more of this crappy solder work you did?

Setup.

The Tele was purchased from a small shop outside of the city and had been setup there before it was put up in the showroom very good to go. No I don't think it was a bad idea to set it up but would have liked it done to my specs (which I mentioned) and it was not. I noticed the ridiculous fret buzz upon my return home and decided to live with it until... weeks later. I never checked the electronics deciding to have some faith in that they did what they said and what they charged me for. I installed the new custom shop Samarium Cobalt noiseless and my solder job was horrific solder everywhere but they did work. I asked them to please clean up my solder job or change the pots entirely they did nothing. On my over 80.00 dollar reciept it listed what they did including the setup and clean up of the electronics. Why this was not done I don't know but when I brought it to there attention one of the staff was pretty shocked when I showed him nothing was done but still wanted to charge me for the pot. I basically paid over 80.00 for a setup that seems a bit high especially for a poor job. When I mentioned the new fret buzz I was told sounds like a tele to me when it really was not this way before. I had a bad experience all around my apologies for the rant.

Patrick Ogle on PSF 95

By: Peter Duxbury Smith (not verified)

How weird! Easiest thing in the world to switch a Takamine preamp. They make them to be interchangeable. Changed the Accuracoustic on my PSF 95 for a CoolTube II just recently - A very worthwhile upgrade! Yet Patrick Ogle in the video says it is difficult and don't venture to try it? I believe most of the rest of what he says...I think.... and..yes ..I suppose that guitars can become less valuable than when you bought them...especially if you have bashed them around a lot....But there were less than a hundred PSF 95s distributed, I am given to understand. So it may not be that easy to find one if you want one, at any price. Some have been tampered with (like the one played behind Willie Nelson by Jody Payne on WN's "Live in Amsterdam" DVD - probably to address the very feedback sensitivity issues identified by PO here.) Hven't seen what was done to fix POs PSF95 up yet.... But I fited the CoolTube II preamp and a removable TrAx soundhole pickup. The soundhole pickup removes some of the acoustic properties so sometimes I prefer to have it out of the way. But for large venue feedback problems having it in works great.....

The guitar may have only had 100 made and no more of these than a few hundred. BUT that and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee. The number of guitars MADE doesn't make them valuable. I have never seen this model selling for more than $800 and the list was $2500. What makes one valuable is if collectors or players find them desirable and, in this case, they do not. This is actually a decent guitar when it isn't plugged in. The issue is that I hate (and I am far from alone in this) this sort of pick up. And I also hate the cool tube II....brutal....maybe even worse than the pick up installed.

Takamine PSF-95

By: JC (not verified)

I have one of these with a mfg date in 1994. If you don't like the pre-amp, it's a two minute job to change it. Takamine offers a choice of pre-amp options and they are generally regarded as tops in stock A/E gear.

I can't believe you could say it's some difficult undertaking, and the "tech" at the shop you put in your video seemed to be shilling for Baggs. I have nothing against Baggs, in fact I'm on their artists list and own Baggs gear, but your guy also seemed ignorant of the Takamine options and the ease of swapping them. Your comments about the pre-amp make you both look foolish. Unfortunately, that spills over to the rest of your comments, accurate or not. If you don't know the simplest things about a guitar about which you take the time to make a video, how can anything you say be afforded any weight?

You are the first person I have ever heard say bad things about the sound of the PSF-95. I regularly gig two Martin dreads, two Gibson jumbos, and the Tak. They all have their voices, and they are all good or I wouldn't keep them. The PSF-95 has been the most difficult to keep because people keep asking me to sell it to them. They are extremely difficult to find.

The back and sides are made of Ovankol, a tonewood in the rosewood family. If you want to make tech related videos, educate yourself first.

It's known that cash makes people free. But what to do when somebody has no cash? The only one way is to get the personal loans and short term loan.
