TC Electronic RebelHead450 Rebels Against Bad Bass Tone At Winter NAMM Show

TC Electronic RebelHead450

Bassists take center stage at Winter NAMM 2009 where TC Electronic targets a rarer audience with the release of the RebelHead450. It's a bass head that allows bassists to target their audiences with TC Electronic's versatility, power and convenience.

Since it all starts with practice, the RebelHead450 contains back panel rehearsal inputs. A supplied mini-jack to RCA cable lets you send sound from your iPod, phone, computer or MP3 player so you can practice along with your horde of stored tunes. For practice that won't disturb the neighbors, TC Electronic takes the high-quality headphone amp from their Studio Konnekt 48 interface and includes a speaker filter that lets you take out the bass signal from your song source so you can fill in with your own basslines.

Giving you more than just a tuner output, the RebelHead450 has a built-in tuner. Though necessary and, by nature of their necessity, not fun, this tuner defies logic by offering a mute button that activates a full-resolution tuner "light ring." It's no laser light show, but it's more fun than you'd expect.

TC Electronic also put a brain in the RebelHead450, which gives bassists a rarity in bass amps -- presets. This is especially helpful if you play multiple basses throughout a set. TC figured three bass user memories was enough, just to really stick it to any jerks who play more than three basses during a set.

As you'd expect from TC Electronic, the RebelHead450 also provides a wider tonal range than most bass amps. And pardon me for make assumptions about your expectations, but TC Electronic gives you the opportunity to change the focus of each tone control. More specifically, it means you can access semi-parametric bands to really zero in on a frequency you want to boost or cut.

The RebelHead450 also boasts better tube amp emulation than most transistor designs to what TC credits as a failure to account for the "crucial characteristics of the full preamp and power amp sections." Finally, Spectra Comp also provides smarter built in compression thanks to a technology which provides multi-band compression on a "per string" basis for more even compression up and down the fretboard.

"includes a speaker filter that lets you take out the bass signal from your song source so you can fill in with your own basslines."

No, the "speaker filter" emulates the tone of a speaker cabinet, so your direct signal sounds as if you are playing through a cab.

"this tuner defies logic by offering a mute button that activates a full-resolution tuner "light ring." It's no laser light show, but it's more fun than you'd expect."

Defies logic? Seems very logical to me! Do you want to tune without the mute on? having the mute also activate the tuner makes perfect sense. I think you are just using phrases without thinking about their meaning.

"...a rarity in bass amps -- presets. This is especially helpful if you play multiple basses throughout a set."

How about you have one bass, but want to use different tones for different songs? That seems like a better idea to me.

"And pardon me for make assumptions about your expectations, but TC Electronic gives you the opportunity to change the focus of each tone control. More specifically, it means you can access semi-parametric bands to really zero in on a frequency you want to boost or cut."

Say that again? How about you can define the center frequency of each EQ band? You don't access semi parametric bands.

Are you really familiar with writing about music equipment?
