Sound Forge And Christmas Lights: Todd Carter At Pitchfork

September 10, 2007
Todd Carter on Electronics with the Lightbox Orchestra
Sound Forge is the program of choice for experimental musician and production engineer Todd Carter, who helmed the electronics section in Pitchfork's iteration of the Lightbox Orchestra. In this audio interview, Gearwire's Gretchen Hasse talks with Carter after the Lightbox set, discussing his technique and what it's like to work in a huge group of musicians directed by a man wielding cuecards and flashing lights.

According to Northwestern University's WNUR Jazz Wiki, the Lightbox Orchestra is an "ever-changing large ensemble lead by Fred Lonberg-Holm, that improvises freely under the limitations of the 'lightbox'. Lonberg-Holm (or in some cases one of his band members) controls a not-terribly-sophisticated apparatus with colored bulbs that light up and sometimes a collection of large cue cards that give directions to the many improvising musicians."

The lineup for Pitchfork 2007 included Jeb Bishop,Todd Carter, Michael Colligan, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jeff Parker, Jen-Clare Paulson, Frank Rosaly, Jason Roebke, Ken Vandermark, Nate Wooley and Michael Zerang. Click the audio file to hear Carter's take on the experience.
