Vicoustic Vari Bass Variable Bass Traps: You Can't Tuna Fish, Unless It's A Bass
It may look like a public art sculpture, but the Vicoustic Vari Bass is actually an object with extremely practical value. These free-standing bass traps are tune-able to quickly address the bass problems specific to whatever room they're placed in.
By rotating the top-mounted wooden cap (drilled with a series of variously resonant pots), these bass traps can be tuned to abate frequencies from 40 Hz to 100 Hz. Its a far more cost-effective solution than ordering custom-tuned (though fixed-frequency) traps, or buying a cheaper bass trap only to discover it doesn't do anything to solve the specific problem in your studio.
Vicoustic Vari Bass traps even feature a little frequency scale along the rotating wooden cap, so you know exactly to which frequency the trap is tuned. That's a nice feature in case some over-caffeinated engineer or ecstatic client somehow knocks the trap out of tune with your room.
The Vicoustic press release refers you to the individual retailers for pricing, though most aren't stocking (or advertising pricing) just yet. Vicoustic has recently announced Rode Microphones as their US distributor, so you can expect to see them available in North America shortly.

New Vicoustic Vari Bass
New Vicoustic Vari Bass offers even more effective treatment of low frequency issues
We're pleased to announce that the latest version of Vari Bass, Vicoustic’s revolutionary stand-alone, tunable bass trap is now in stock.
Specifically developed to eradicate problems associated with low frequency resonance, Vari Bass is designed for use in any professional recording space, home studio, or hi-fi room. Made from wood and high-density acoustic foam, the bass trap can be tuned by simply rotating its wooden top (which has a series of resonant ports) until the problem disappears. A scale is included to show the exact frequencies on which Vari Bass is acting. The unit’s stand-alone structure enables it to be repositioned as required and used in different rooms, offering a more cost-effective and flexible solution than many other comparable products.
In addition to certain features being refined for greater precision and efficiency, the latest version of Vari Bass has also undergone an additional series of rigorous tests, which have indicated that the product’s performance is now even better than first predicted during its development stages.
