V-Picks Acoustic And V-Picks Screamer: Putting Thick Picks To The Test

V-Picks Acoustic

Lately, I've developed somewhat of a fascination for trying out small guitar accessories that claim to make a big difference. Point in case, my free sample of nut sauce arrived safely in my mailbox this weekend, but before I had the chance to analyze the results (more on this later), I saw that V-Picks just released the V-Pick Acoustic.

Vinni Smith, the man behind V-Picks, decided to apply his thicker pick towards the acoustic guitar, and at his standard 2.75 mm, the V-Pick Acoustic aims to put a stomping on your average acoustic pick. Vinni describes the resulting sound of the V-Pick Acoustic:

"One day I came out of the workshop with a V-Pick that sports a different beveled edge. It is a much brighter sounding pick. On open chords and slower runs and movements, it makes my acoustic guitar sound like I have always wanted it to sound! They still have the V-Pick 'gripping' action and the very cool V-Pick look and feel."

Since I do not own an acoustic guitar, I decided to order the "Screamer" -- the pick Vinni recommends as an introduction into using his meaty V-Picks. The Screamer's longer bevel creates a sharper attack that's more voluminous and brightens tone with an automatic mid-range scoop.

It's no secret that every guitar player has preferences when it comes to picks. I've never been really satisfied with anything thinner than a millimeter, but nearly tripling that is quite a jump. In just three to five business days, I'll see what kind of difference one and three quarters millimeters are going to make.
