If you want a mix to sound better, simply turning up the volume on everything just makes it a louder mess. So learned Sam Rosenthal of Black Tape for a Blue Girl, before he really understood the purpose of compression.
Enter Waves L1 Ultramaximizer, the plug-in that allows Mr. Rosenthal to really work with that pesky singer and daunting flautist. Now if it sounds like a mess, at least he knows it's not the compression.

yes there is
guys who sit in the basement of their mom's house or working at the local record stores never get it. He produces stuff. That doesn't mean he is a top notch engineer or a gearhead.
Someone might easily create music and sounds that they want to do and agonize over the gear. And this dude has been doing this since before DAWs so in there he had to adjust to new technology while NOT being a gearhead. Often the biggest gearheads never to anything but fart around worrying they might do something "wrong". SO he learned to do things one way, missed a few pieces here and there, and then picked them up as he went along. He is not alone in this. So that was part of the point of the comment.
And what was the point of your comment? "I know more than HIM" right? SO...the point of MY comment was to say "Ok tell me what you have done"....A gauntlet thrown down that you did not, I note, pick up...
