Percussa AudioCubes: Controlling Ableton Live With Colorful Blocks

January 19, 2008
Percussa AudioCubes Explained

The Percussa AudioCubes are definitely more unique than almost anything we've seen at Winter NAMM 2008, or elsewhere for that matter. These cubes, which control your audio by detecting relative distance and location from other cubes, bring a very visual aspect to DJ performance.

In this video, we take a look at the cubes and find out what they're all about before Bill gives them a shot.

Hate to say it....

Hate to say it, but I agree.... A few months ago, I saw a documentary about a backlit (or should I say "bottomlit") table on which different cube shaped modules could serve as oscillators, envelopes, effects, etc. and interact with eachother not only via spatial relationship to eachother, but by thier position on the platform as well. And that's not all -- there was visual feedback in the form of multi-colored neon-esque light effects indicating the status and function of all the modules in play. You could contro wave shape by rotating one, and amplitude by varying its proximity to another. It was like a cross between analog synthesis and Tron. Bjork has one. Damn cool.

This ain't where it's at. Sorta neat, but not mindblowingly cool like what I saw. It was on Current TV... It's called the ReacTable. Damn cool.

i have to say

I was a little disappointed that they don't react beyond the one sensor on each side. I was hoping that each side would actually react instead of the sensor in the middle. A bit of a letdown. The ReacTable is awesome, though, and I want to get one some day.

I think doing part of your electronic music set with a few of these would put your show over the top at a drunk bar or similar venue. someone send me some of these for free so I can do that!
