Zoom H4n Studio Demo Epic, The First

Zoom H4n Demo 1

One day we will all have devices as handy as the Zoom H4n. They won't even necessarily have anything to do with recording; they'll just be pocket-size devices that allow you to do something like design, construct, tailor and launder a suit of clothes.

Until then, we will have to be satisfied with the most convenient (and cutest!) thing to happen to field recording since. . . well, since the last Zoom H4. Heh.

H2 and H4

By: Anonymous Coward the Movie

I have a TEAC 3340 reel to reel 4 track and a bunch of 4 channel live tapes I recorded many years ago. I would like to take the 4 channel playback from the TEAC into my Zoom H2 (what I currently own) and end up with a 4 track digital recording that I can preserve the recordings and also re-mix. Can I do this with the Zoom H2 that I currently own or do I need to invest in the H4 or will that not work either?

Thanks - like the videos and reviews.

Hi BP,
Since the H2 is a stereo recorder, you can use it to "mix down" your analog 4-track mixes to stereo. Not sure if you can record each channel independently though. Another way to go is to record stereo mixes of 2 tracks at a time until you have wav files of all 4 tracks. Then dump those into a multitrack editing program and mix from there. Hope this is helpful.

4-channel recording

By: oomalley

Hi,

Just to confirm: there's no four-mono-channel record mode. The 4channel mode records dual, stereo wav files, and there's no way to change this. In the MTR mode, you can record from up to two inputs at once, and record either two mono wav files or a single stereo wav file.

Regardless, you could still use the H4n to record all four tracks at once, create those two stereo wav files, and then even mix them down in the Zoom's MTR mode. . . though as you can see in the second video in this series, you'll need to plug the H4n into your computer to move the files from the $channel directory to the MTR directory, at which point you might as well drop them into a DAW on your computer.

The next thing to consider is: how are you going to hook up all those channels? The 1/2 combi jacks are easy, but to hook an external source into the L/R pair, you're going to need to get into the unit's stereo mini jack. You're gonna need to get some kinda not-so-common adapters, or build a little adapter tree. Still, it's totally possible.
